The name of the preserve "Nurgush" was offered by a famous Vyatka local historian and naturalist Alexander Dmitrievich Fokin after the name of one of the largest lakes of the reserve.
Before the revolution, the forests of thep reserve belonged to private owners. After collectivization, the lands were transferred to the collective farm. In July 1952, A.D. Fokin recommended this territory for a hunting reserve. The Nurgush complex Hunting Reserve was established on December 8, 1952.
At the beginning of 1994, a project to create the Nurgush Preserve was prepared. It was based on the materials of the "Project for the organization of the Nurgush Reserve of the Kirov region.
The Nurgush Nature Reserve was created by a Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation dated 05/25/1994. In 2010 the reserve was expanded.
