Mammals
At
present there are 47 mammal species in the Reserve that occupy all
possible habitats of the reserve.
A
large proportion of the mammals of the Reserve are near-water
animals. The most common are beavers, muskrats and racoons.
Muskrats
are in the Red Book of the Russian Federation
and
4
species of bats
are
listed in the Red Book of the Kirov region.
The
largest predators are bears that spend most of the year in the
floodplain. They leave the flooded territory only in winter.
Wolves
come to the Reserve when ice covers the Vyatka River and hunt young
wild boars, mooses and beavers.

Birds
There
are 197 species of birds in the reserve. Most of them are forest and
near—water species.
The
most common are: mallard, teal, black kite, common buzzard, finch and
others.
13 species of birds are listed in the Red Book of the RF
and 14 species are in the Red Book of the Kirov region.
One
of them, the white–tailed eagle, nests only on the territory of the
Nurgush Nature Reserve.

Reptiles
Reptiles
are represented by 6 species. The most numerous are the common snake,
the viper and the viviparous lizard.
